Compactic press kit

Compactic is a focus timer for iPhone and Android that ticks like a real kitchen timer. It has 21 original recordings at three paces, and nothing is sped up or slowed down. €6.99 (Eurozone), $5.99 + tax (US) or £5.99 (UK) once, after a 7-day free trial.

Compactic is a focus timer built around sound. Its 21 ticks are original recordings, 7 for each of three paces (Quick, Medium and Slow), made in a tiny home studio; nothing is sped up or slowed down. You twist a dial to set 1 to 60 minutes and the tick starts. Because you can hear it running, you can put your phone down instead of checking it. It works in silent mode and with the screen locked, shows the time left on the lock screen, and costs €6.99 (Eurozone), $5.99 + tax (US) or £5.99 (UK) once after a 7-day free trial, with no subscription, no ads and no account. Made by Raz and Rachele at bumu.studio.

How to try it

A mini guide for reviewers.

  1. Keep the Quick pace, set the dial to 25 minutes and let go.
  2. Lock your phone and put it face down.
  3. Start the thing you've been putting off. The tick tells you the timer is running, so there's no need to check.

Quotes from the makers

"I struggle with procrastination. The steady tick of a kitchen timer makes it easier for me to start, so I recorded a few and put them in an app."

(Raz)

"Give me a five-minute administrative task and I'll find a way to put it off for a week. Especially at home, where suddenly everything else seems more interesting. I wanted something simple to help me stop postponing things and just get started."

(Rachele)
